Two
die-hard car vandals have been apprehended in Lagos state after a CCTV
camera picked their faces in the course of a breaking and entry
operation.
Two suspected car vandals, Kwesi Godwin and Michael Omotayo, have
been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command on the Victoria Island
of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Godwin, a 22-year-old Ghanaian, and Omotayo, 29, were captured by a Closed Circuit Television Camera before they were arrested and taken to the Maroko Police Division on Thursday.
It was gathered that the duo allegedly broke into a Toyota Highlander parked on Aboyade Cole Street at about 10pm last Wednesday and stole valuables from the vehicle.
A police source said the owner of the vehicle, identified only as Rasheed, had reported to the police, who got the faces of the suspects from the CCTV installed on a building on the street.
He said, “The suspects did not know that a CCTV on the street had captured their faces. They were arrested the following day.”
Kwesi said he learnt breaking into cars in 2001.
He said, “I was seven years old then. At a point, I left home and met Michael (Omotayo) at a work site. We had been ‘striking’ together.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said, “They have confessed to the crime and will be charged to court soon.”

Donald
Trump has edged closer to fulfilling his longterm dream of being the
American president after flooring his rivals in 5 states despite a
rumour connivance among his opponents.
Donald Trump
Donald Trump has won presidential primaries in all five US states
that voted on Tuesday, while Hillary Clinton took four out of five.
Trump called himself the Republican “presumptive nominee” after victories in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The results bring him closer to the number of delegates he needs before the party’s national convention in July.
For the Democrats, Mrs Clinton was denied a clean sweep by Bernie Sanders. Sanders won the vote in Rhode Island, and vowed to fight to the end of the primaries process.
Speaking at Philadelphia Convention Centre after securing the four other states, Mrs Clinton said her campaign was setting “bold, progressive goals” to improve lives in the US.
“We believe in the goodness of our people and the greatness of our nation,” she said. Meanwhile Trump told supporters in New York he would not moderate his policies if elected president.
“I’m not changing,” he said. “You know I went to the best schools. I’m like a very smart person. I’m going to represent our country with dignity and very well.
“But I don’t really want to change my personality. You know, it got me here.”
His rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, have already shifted their attention to upcoming states, teaming up to help each other in the Indiana, Oregon and New Mexico primaries, reports the BBC.
Trump has condemned their pact as a sign of weakness and desperation, and another sign of the Republican party colluding against him. “The Republican party needs something much better than that,” he said after his latest victories were announced on Tuesday.
Neither Kasich nor Cruz has a chance of securing the Republican nomination outright. The hope of a contested convention this July in Cleveland is keeping them in the race.
This scenario would see party delegates – Republican officials and activists – choose the nominee. However Trump is edging closer to securing 1,237 delegates, which would mean he could secure the nomination before the convention.
Speaking in Huntington, West Virginia, after the vote, Bernie Sanders vowed to fight to the end of the nomination process, saying he would attract broad support in November’s election.
“The reason that we are generating this enthusiasm is because we are doing something very unusual in contemporary politics. We are telling the truth,” he said.
Despite some success, it is unlikely Sanders will be able to overcome Mrs Clinton’s lead to become the Democratic nominee for president.
The pact between Kasich and Cruz got off to a rocky start on Tuesday. The Ohio governor is to give Cruz a “clear path” by not campaigning in Indiana and Cruz will reciprocate in New Mexico and Oregon. But neither has endorsed tactical voting among their supporters.
Speaking in Indiana on Tuesday night, Cruz said his supporters could look forward to some success as the race moved on to more conservative states.
His event was held at a basketball court where some scenes were filmed for the 1986 film Hoosiers, about a small-town high school basketball team that wins the state championship.
The Texas senator attempted to recreate a scene from the film but was mocked on social media for referring to a basketball “ring” rather than a “hoop”.

Too
many bodies of Nigerian soldiers killed on April 18 in a Boko Haram
ambush in Gubio area of Borno state, are yet to be retrieved, a soldier
in the war front has revealed.
Military soldiers
A Nigerian soldier on the war front has exclusively revealed to TheCable that bodies of Nigerian soldiers killed on April 18 in a Boko Haram ambush in Gubio, Borno state, are yet to be retrieved.
According to the soldier, Gubio, a local government, is the 'nemesis'
of Nigerian troops as the insurgents are still fully in control,
despite the successes recorded since President Muhammadu Buhari came to
power.
He said only 15 bodies of the slain soldiers were recovered, with
the actual figures of the casualties yet to be made public, adding that
it was impossible for the Nigerian military to penetrate Gubio because
of the insurgents’ 'superior fire power', although he said successes have been recorded in other local government areas of the state.
"In one battalion, out of 500 plus, they are no longer up to
150. Half of them did not come back alive. Boko Haram killed some but
our soldiers also killed some insurgents. Of the 12 soldiers that
recently returned from Guinea Bissau, 10 have died," he said.
"Our men are in Gubio local government area, though the place
we wanted to capture is Damasak, which has a boundary with Niger
Republic. That (Gubio) is the only local government area under Boko
Haram. They control the whole area.
"Boko Haram is well-armed… all of them. Anti-aircraft gun is
what they use to kill people. Their vehicles are the colour of the
Nigerian army just as their uniforms. Boko Haram uses anti-aircraft
guns, but we don’t have those. And they have more than 20
rocket-propelled grenades; we have only two.
"When we were trying to enter Gubio on Monday (April 18), they
ambushed us. It is not clear to us how they got to know our mission.
"On that day soldiers said that they did not want to go into
that local government area because they did not have arms. But their
bosses said that they must go there without being well-armed. Two
battalions (113 and 158) of the fifth brigade went there.
"Uncountable soldiers lost their lives. The corpses are still
there now. We only recovered 15 bodies, but many of the soldiers are in
the bush dead, and their bodies are decomposing. And authorities are
going to block their accounts if their bodies are not recovered. Their
families will not be able to access their salaries or benefits. There
must be a dead body before you can make claims.
"There is no reinforcement, and the commanders are asking the
soldiers to go back there. Some soldiers have run away; there are less
than 100 in a particular battalion now. The ammunition has been
depleted, and no reinforcement. The two battalions are scattered and
there is no encouragement."
However, the army has described the report as false. Speaking with TheCable, Sani Usman, army spokesman, called for a 'proper questioning' of soldiers who leak information to journalists.
He explained that some of the soldiers who quickly run to give
false information to the press were the ones running away from battle.
Usman described them as 'cowards'.

A
randy pastor who kidnapped three girls and demanded a foursome from
them has been arrested after he r*ped his victims and subjected them to
many unthinkable acts.
One of the victims show bruises on her body
"The pastor pushed me to the bed at gunpoint and said we must
perform a 'free' pornographic movie to make my friends jealous. He put
his fingers inside my private parts. I pleaded with his wife to make him
stop."
This was a harrowing experience of one of the three girls who were
kidnapped by a rogue Carletonville pastor who also r*ped and assaulted
them in his house, Sowetan reports.
The victims who spoke to Sowetan at the weekend recounted their eight hours of hell in the hands of the randy pastor.
It was gathered that on the night of April 3, the gun-toting pastor
took turns r*ping them after assaulting them with a baton and a wire in
the bedroom while his wife watched TV in the lounge.
The pastor also threatened to shoot them and murder their families
should they attempt to flee. Two of the girls are 17 and 18 years old
and are members of the pastor's church in Wedela township in
Carletonville while the third victim is a 25-year-old friend of the two
teenagers.
"He brought me into the room and said we must have a foursome.
We refused. He forcefully penetrated me with his fingers and once he was
aroused he proceeded to rape my two friends who were bleeding from
being assaulted."
Earlier the pastor had locked the room and forced the girls to strip n*ked.
"We pleaded with his wife to help us. We could hear her
laughing. He forced me to watch as he raped each of them at gunpoint. I
prayed to God to spare our lives," said the 25-year-old who shook as she
described their experience.
"My family was all I could think about as he was raping me. My
body had been numbed from all the physical pain I had endured from him," said the younger girl.
At some point during the ordeal, the pastor looked insane and was
rambling on about how he'd kill them. However, he panicked and released
the older woman after her family called and threatened to send the
police to his house.
The police later came and rescued the two girls and arrested the
pastor. Now, the pastor faces three counts of rape and assault, two of
kidnapping and one of pointing a firearm.
It was revealed that the parents of the girls had sent them their
because they had believed he could give the girls spiritual guidance and
job. But, things turned around for the worse.
"He would hit me with his fists and then lock me in the bedroom for days," the younger girl said.
It was also revealed that the two teenagers had earlier escaped
from the pastor's house only for him to track them down and take them
back. He used their older friend to track them down. He brought all
three back to his house where he allegedly assaulted and raped them.
"This horrific incident has broken our family. We trusted him
with our children only to learn that we were feeding a sex-hungry
monster. I've lost faith in church leaders," said the mother of one of the victims.
The victims are receiving psychological help and police are preparing them for the court case.
The new development has left the pastor's congregation totally in
shock after the allegations were made against him. Congregants of the
church headed by the alleged sex-pest pastor have been left in the
lurch.
Sowetan visited the place where the tent church once stood, on an
empty field in Wedela township, Carletonville, and found out that it was
dismantled a few days after locals heard that the pastor was linked to
the assault and rape of three girls from their neighbourhood.
The pastor, who is also involved in a property business and runs a
driving school, had relocated his church from Khutsong township in
March, ahead of the Easter holidays.
"The church has been dissolved indefinitely. Everybody is
shocked at what he did. We are angry at him and don't want anything to
do with him anymore," said a former church member.
Another former congregant said the church had about 50 members and a
few of them had since joined a nearby church led by the pastor's
mother.
"We accepted that he practised polygamy [but] why he would rape still baffles us," said the former congregant.
Sowetan visited the pastor's house in Carletonville and saw a truck loaded with tents and a fence parked outside.
His wife did not want to comment immediately.
"I know what happened. We will call you and give comment," she said on Thursday. She never called back and her phone remained off yesterday.
The incident shocked the people of Wedela.
"I know those girls. They like going to parties but that
doesn't mean they deserved what happened to them. The perpetrator should
be removed from society, " said one of the girl's neighbours.
Warrant Officer Peter Masooa confirmed that the pastor was charged
with three counts of rape and assault, two of kidnapping and another of
pointing a firearm.
The court rejected his bail application and he will be back in court next month.

The man who is a resident of Katsina state, shared a photo of what
he found after he had bought ice block to cool hmself from the heat.
Known on twitter simply as Madiba, the man took to his twitter account, @nazirgaladanchi, to shared the photo.

Many
of us are unwittingly destroying our teeth through everyday habits such
as eating dried fruit or drinking too much tea, an expert has warned.
From frequent swimming to swilling wine and sipping hot water and lemon.
Dr. Tariq Idrees, a dentist at Cariswood Dental clinic, Manchester,
has said that people make a number of simple mistakes which severely
damage their pearly whites.
For example, going swimming can harm our smile as chlorine is
linked with enamel erosion. And swirling wine around the mouth to taste
the flavour ensures the teeth become coated in tooth-rotting acid - with
prosecco being particularly bad.
Here, he reveals why we should stop drinking hot water and lemon and start pairing fizzy drinks with cheese...
1. CHEWING ICE CUBES IN DRINKS
The brittleness and cold temperatures of ice cubes can actually
cause teeth to fracture. They can cause microscopic cracks in the
surface of the enamel, which could lead to bigger dental problems over
time. Crushed ice is less harmful than bigger cubes.
2. EATING DRIED FRUITS
Raisins or more fashionable dried fruits such as cranberries,
mangos and pineapples are all terrible for your teeth. They are highly
acidic - but what makes them particularly damaging is they stick to the
teeth, compounding the damage.
3. SWILLING WINE
Wine is particularly bad for your teeth because it comes from
grapes which are acidic fruits. Some wines are worse than others - white
wine is more acidic than red - and fizzy wine such as prosecco is even
worse because the gas acts as an acid too.
Wine experts tell you to swirl a good wine around your mouth to
bring out the flavour - but this is the worst thing you can do if you
want to preserve your teeth. Swirling simply ensures more of your teeth
are covered in the acid.
4. HOT WATER AND LEMON, TEA AND COFFEE
Not only only does it stain your teeth but it rots them, too. They
are both high in caffeine, particularly coffee, and this dries out the
mouth, making us more susceptible to tooth decay.
They stain the teeth too and perhaps surprisingly tea is worse than
coffee when it comes to staining. This is because tannin in tea is a
much more powerful staining agent than caffeine. You have to drink quite
a lot of black coffee to stain your teeth - five or six cups a day.
Staining from coffee is very superficial, effecting just the
biofilm, a thin layer of bacteria which covers the teeth and gums, and
doesn't penetrate through the enamel itself.
Lots of women drink lemon and water as a healthy alternative to tea
and coffee. This causes gross teeth erosion and should be avoided.
5. SWIMMING
If you swim in a pool often, you may find that you're doing harm to
your teeth. The chemicals that are put into swimming pools,
particularly chlorine, are linked to enamel erosion.
Both the American Journal of Dentistry and the Journal of the
Canadian Dental Association report that swimming in a pool with a high
chlorine content for just 34 weeks can cause a rapid increases in dental
erosion and sensitivity.
Best to keep your mouth closed when you swim at a pool - better still, swim in the sea.
6. USING A HARD-BRISTLED TOOTHBRUSH
Some people think the firmer the toothbrush, the better. This isn't so, especially for older adults.
With age, the gums push back and the roots of the teeth become
exposed, often increasing sensitivity. The root is covered with
cementum, which is worn away more easily than enamel.
A brush with too-firm bristles may irritate the gums and lead to sensitive teeth.
7. BRUSHING TOO MUCH
Brushing your teeth twice a day (in the mornings and last thing at
night) is sufficient. Many people brush more than the recommended number
of times per day - especially after a big meal.
Brushing within 30 minutes of a big meal of fizzy drink like cola,
can lead to worse damage. After drinking fizzy or acidic drinks, the
acid burns into the enamel of your teeth - and the layer below the
enamel, called dentin.
It's also important not to brush too soon after finishing a meal -
this can drive the acid deeper into the teeth, corroding them faster
than they would have rotted by themselves.
Wait at least an hour after a meal or fizzy drink before brushing - this will give your saliva a chance to neutralise the acid.
8. EATING TOO MUCH FRUIT
Fruit is extremely acidic and particularly harmful to teeth. It is
packed full of sugar which bacteria in turn feeds on, producing acid as
waste.
That acid then leads to erosion. This leaves health-conscious
people in a tricky situation: their doctor is telling them to have five a
day, but their dentist is saying the opposite.
So how can people minimise the damage while eating healthily? Group
fruit consumption into sessions to minimise the adverse effects.
Drinking water and eating food with neutralising qualities, such as cheese, can help reduce the negative effect on teeth.
9. TONGUE AND LIP PIERCINGS
It is very common for patients with these piercings to chip their teeth by accident when they are eating.
10. USING TEETH AS TOOLS
Lots of us use our teeth for odd jobs - to rip a price tag off a
piece of clothing, open a packet of crisps, uncap a bottle of nail
varnish, pull out a watch stem.
This can be hard on our teeth, traumatising them or causing the
edge of a weakened tooth to chip off or even fracture. Keep tools such
as scissors or pliers handy to do the dirty work and let you maintain
good dental health.

World
Bank has predicted an increase in the prices of crude oil in the
international market to the favour of Nigeria and other oil producing
countries.
Fresh hope of a quicker recovery is on the horizon for
cash-strapped Nigeria as the World Bank has raised its 2016 oil price
forecast up from the previous level of $37 per barrel to a new height
of $41 according to the Guardian.
The crude oil price at the international market according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data yesterday was between $43 and $44 per barrel.
Despite the country’s diversification efforts, crude oil remains the major income earner for the country with the sub-nationals heavily depending on revenue from oil sales at the monthly Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund their activities now reeling in pains since last year when oil prices took a downward plunge as low as $25 per barrel. This followed global slow growth when Nigeria’s 2016 budget benchmark price estimate was fixed at $38 per barrel.
However, the World Bank yesterday said crude oil market rebounded to $40 per barrel in April following production disruptions in Iraq and Nigeria and a decline in non-Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production, mainly U.S. shale.
A proposed production freeze by major producers failed to materialise at a meeting in mid-April.
The World Bank explained that the review of the forecast followed improving market sentiment and a weakening dollar, declaring that its new 2016 forecast for crude oil prices is now $41 per barrel from $37 per barrel, pointing out that Commodity Markets Outlook, as an oversupply in markets, is expected to recede.
“We expect slightly higher prices for energy commodities over the course of the year as markets rebalance after a period of oversupply,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the Commodities Markets Outlook.
“Still, energy prices could fall further if OPEC increases production significantly and non-OPEC production does not fall as fast as expected.”
All main commodity indexes tracked by the World Bank are expected to decline in 2016 from the year before due to persistently elevated supplies, and in the case of industrial commodities – which include energy, metals, and agricultural raw materials – weak growth prospects in emerging market and developing economies.
Energy prices, including oil, natural gas and coal, are due to fall 19.3 per cent in 2016 from the previous year, a more gradual drop than the 24.7 per cent slide forecast in January.
Non-energy commodities, such as metals and minerals, agriculture, and fertilizers, are due to decline 5.1 per cent this year, a downward revision from the 3.7 per cent drop forecast in January.

The Emir of Ilorin has addressed the unabated spate of Fulani herdsmen's onslaught across the geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
Chairman, Kwara State council of traditional rulers and the Emir of
Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, yesterday warned the federal
government to take serious steps to curtail the rising activities of
herdsmen across the country, saying their activities were threatening
existence of Nigeria as an entity, according to the Vanguard.
Speaking when the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, visited him in his palace, during the foundation laying ceremony of KAM integrated steel project, the Emir insisted that the government should be serious in dealing with the incessant security issue.
The emir, who spoke on the increasing cases of herdsmen attacks in most parts of the country, said it was imperative for government to deal with the menace before it degenerated to a repeat of Boko Haram menace.
According to him, “People get it wrong when they describe the rampaging and destructive herdsmen as Fulani herdsmen. They are not Fulani. They are wanders and migrants, people moving from place to place and going everywhere. They are here to destroy Nigeria entity. So, it behooves on the government to be more serious on the issue so that it does not become another Boko Haram on our hands.”
Earlier, Professor Osinbajo said coming to Ilorin was homecoming for him and commended the support received in Kwara State during the campaigns that brought in the present administration.
He added that the present administration would not relent in its efforts until all the electioneering campaigns were delivered to the people.

President
Muhammadu Buhari has redeemed one of his major campaign promises of
fixing the refineries in Nigeria to boost the economy of the country.
Alhaji Idi Mukhtar, Managing Director, Kaduna Refining and
Petrochemical Company (KRPC), says the company will begin daily release
of 2 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from Wednesday.
Mukhtar announced this on Tuesday while receiving the leadership of the state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in his office. He said the company would commence the supply to address the hardship faced by motorists and commuters due to the scarcity of the product.
“I want to announce that by tomorrow, Wednesday, Kaduna Refinery will begin operation with the release of 2 million litters of PMS to motorists in Kaduna and its environs.
“This will help reduce the hardship the citizens are facing due to the fuel scarcity in the state and other parts of the region.
“Sustainability of the product is another issue Nigerians will want to hear but I can tell you that with the available crude oil, we will be producing 2 million litres of PMS a day.
“I can assure you that all hands are on deck to ensure constant supply; we also hope Nigerians will continue to pray for it to be sustained,’’ Mukhtar said.
He blamed the scarcity of the product on some persons in the society whom he described as “bad elements’’.
“We have witnessed 13 infractions on our pipelines between Abuja to Kaduna from March to April.
“We are losing fuel due to activities of unpatriotic elements tampering with pipelines, and this is unfortunate,’’ he said.
Muktar, therefore appealed to the media to intensify campaigns against activities of vandals, stressing that it was time they (vandals) realised the harm done to the country through their unpatriotic behaviour.
He assured the NUJ of the company’s readiness to partner the media in public enlightenment to tackle the activities of those sabotaging government efforts to ensure steady supply of fuel.
Chairman of the council, Malam Muhammed Garba, congratulated Mukhtar on his elevation from Executive Director Services, to Managing Director of the KRPC.
Garba pledged the union’s support to the company through adequate publicity to ensure smooth supply of product.

The Department of State Services has unprecedentedly arrested and detained an aide of Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Barrister Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere
Barrister Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the Senior Special Assistant to
the Senate President on Youth and Student Matters and President of
National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has been arrested and detained
by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his brother, Obinna Ikeagwuonu
who raised alarm on Ikenga’s arrest and detention on Monday, said that
Ikenga had informed his family of an invitation extended by the
Assistant Director of Internal Security.
According to him, Ikenga has not been seen or heard from ever since
he entered into the premises which houses the headquarters of the
Department of State Services, adding that every attempt by his family,
lawyers and personal physician to have access to him have been resisted
by the security outfit.
The statement read: “Information at our disposal has it that
Ikenga informed his family of his invitation to the office of the DSS,
yesterday by 10:00hrs on the call of the Assistant Director Internal
Security.
“He has not been seen nor heard from since the time he entered
the premises of the DSS. Every attempt by his family, lawyers and
personal physician to have access to him have been resisted by the
security outfit.
“Ikenga is the President of the National Youth Council of
Nigeria and also Senior Special Assistant to the Senate President on
Youth and Students Matters and the family has been withstanding immense
pressure while assuring and reassuring Nigerian youths who are calling
from all over the country enquiring about the welfare of their
President.
“We have limits to our strength to withstand this pressure if
Nigeria youths want to approach the State and demand for the whereabouts
of their President."
Ikeagwuonu further disclosed that unofficial information reaching
his family confirmed that barrister Ikenga was interrogated on two
issues; a petition authored by the Minister of Youths and Sports
Development Barr. Solomon Dalung who was indefinitely suspended from the
Board of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, a body over which
Ikenga is President. In the Petition, Dalung maintained that Ikenga had
called on President Muhammadu Buhari to summarily sack him as Minister.
Describing Ikenga’s arrest by the DSS as illegal and the height of
impunity, Ikeagwuonu who noted that the security agency must be held
responsible for whatever happens to his brother, said, “If truly
this is one of the questions for which he is illegally detained without
access to food, water, legal and medical assistance, then that is
impunity at the highest level and we condemn it. Ikenga we are informed
has not been shown any petition so far. Ikenga is a law abiding citizen
who has approached the Courts in defence of his mandate that Solomon
Dalung has severally boasted he will snatch from Ikenga. His lawyers
have initiated contempt proceedings against Mr. Dalung and instead of
the Minister to go to Court; he is using his office and institutions of
State to attempt to intimidate Ikenga.
“He (Ikenga) was alleged to be working with people who the
state is not happy with. If these people who the state is not happy with
refer to the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, then Ikenga has this
message for his captors that he is proud of his relationship and
association with Dr. Saraki and is bold to stand by him. Ikenga will not
deny Saraki because of oppression of the state.”
“We make this statement to inform the world that Ikenga is in
the custody of the Department of State Services, detained illegally and
against his will and for the world to know who to hold responsible
should anything happen to Ikenga.”

After
the heartbreaking killings and massacre by Fulani herdsmen armed to the
teeth, survivors have told stories how they were abandoned by security
agencies to be slaughtered.
Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi shedding tears at the scene of the massacre
Ukpabi Nimbo community in the Uzo-Uwani area of Enugu State
attacked by heavily armed Fulani herdsmen on Monday, have blamed
security agencies for failing to act on “credible” information they
provided before the attack.
The villagers revealed that the security agencies abandoned them
after they were alerted of the ongoing attack. This was disclosed when
the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, visited the community on
Tuesday.
The General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, Enugu, Major General
Attahiru Ibrahim, and the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Nwodibo
Ekechukwu, were also in the village on Tuesday.
Security was beefed up in the community during the visit, with
heavily armed military and police personnel positioned at strategic
locations.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Ukpabi Nimbo at the village
square, the community leader, Dr. George Ajogu, said the villagers were
not taken unawares by the attack. He revealed that the security agencies
were told of the impending attack and they chose to abandon his people,
in fact, they practically ran away.
A corpse of one of the victims of the herdsmen’s attack, which was
uncovered in the bush on Tuesday morning, was displayed in a police
Toyota Hilux van at the event.
The corpse was said to be that of a secondary school teacher, who
was reportedly abducted from his home and killed in the bush by the
herdsmen. The corpse had deep machete cuts all over it.
Ajogu added that more corpses were being uncovered in the bush after more than 20 dead bodies were recovered on Monday.
He noted that the attack would have been prevented had the security
agencies acted on information made available to them by the villagers.
Speaking in an emotion-laden voice, Ajogu stated, “Had it been that security agencies responded appropriately, this would not have happened.
“They (Fulani herdsmen) did not take us unawares, we knew they were coming.
“We are not happy; we have been crying for more than two weeks that our community is under threat. Now, over 20 people are dead.
“We are still discovering corpses; we discovered one corpse this morning and so many corpses are still in the bush.
“We have been shouting and crying but the security agencies did
not come to our aid; only one police patrol van comes to this
community.
“Because we lack security, the Fulani come here and tell us the
land is theirs. They tell the farmers to kneel down and they rape the
women in front of their husbands.”
Explaining further, Ajogu said they were always under attack from
the herdsmen who are always heavily armed. He said the Fulani herdsmen
have turned their village into grazing fields for their cattles.
“Please don’t leave, if you leave now, they will return to attack us again.
“They (herdsmen) have been killing and raping our people for some time now,” the community leader added.
The Caretaker Chairman, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Mr. Cornel
Onwubuya, said he personally alerted the governor, the commissioner of
police and heads of other security agencies after he received a
confirmation from some Fulani leaders in the area that the herdsmen were
going to attack the community.
Onwubuya disclosed that acting on the report, Ugwuanyi convened a state security council meeting on Sunday night.
According to Onwubuya, the said security council meeting lasted
till the early hours of Monday, shortly before the herdsmen struck.
He added, “We had a security report that this was going to happen and I convened a meeting with Fulani stakeholders in Enugu State.
“Some Fulani leaders told us that the herdsmen were camped very
close to our community. I informed the Commissioner of Police, Enugu
State, who assured us that the attack would be stopped.
“He (Commissioner of Police, Enugu) said he would get in touch
with the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State to prevent the attack.
“The information we got was credible but unfortunately, they still attacked us.”
Speaking on the ocassion, Ugwuanyi said heads of the various
security agencies in the state assured him that the attack would be
failed, described the incident as a sad moment for Enugu State.
He said, “At the emergency security council meeting, which I
convened, we were given all the assurances that the attack would not
happen.”
He said the attackers came in from Kogi in two lorry loads of herdsmen before entering Enugu to attack.
“The Federal Government should do the needful, but as the governor, I call for peace and prayers.
“Until the Federal Government decides to address this situation, this will continue to happen,” he said.
Ugwuanyi announced a donation of N5m to the community, adding that
the government would foot the medical bills of the injured. He said the
youths have been restrained from embarking on a reprissal attack.
According to Punch, one of the injured victims, Patrick Eze, just
finished his National Youth Service Corps programme. Eze sustained
severe cuts on his ankles and other parts of his body.
Another victim, Mr. Kingsley Ezeugo, a former local government
councillor, said he only survived because the herdsmen left him for dead
after inflicting severe machete cuts on him. Several victims in
critical conditions were observed in various hospitals in the Nsukka
area.
A youth, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said the
herdsmen stampeded the villagers out of their homes by shooting at
houses.
“Those who were caught were taken into the bush and slaughtered with machetes,” the youth said.
Many of the villagers have left the village in fear.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command said it was investigating the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, who said this on Tuesday, however, said six persons died in the attack.
