Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulkareem, the Chairman of the Gamboru/Ngala Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno, on Tuesday, appealed to the military to re-open the Maiduguri-Gamboru highway to facilitate movement of humanitarian aids to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) returning from Cameroon Republic.
Abdulkareem made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the National Commission for Refugees in Gamboru.
He said that the re-opening of the highway would also facilitate movement of goods and services to the area.
Abdulkareem said that the number of IDPs who returned from Fotokol in Cameroon had risen to 60,000 from the initial 50,000.
“The initial number of the returnees from Fotokol in Cameroon was 50,000.But the number had risen to 60,000 as more people had returned home,” he said.
Abdulkareem said the most pressing needs of the returnees were food and shelter as most houses had been burnt down by the Boko Haram terrorists.
Speaking earlier, Mallam Mohammed Bello the leader of the delegation said that the visit was to assess the living condition of the returnees from the neighbouring Cameroon Republic.
Bello said that the commission was working out plans to provide basic needs of the refugees including health, shelter, food and other requirements.
